Total lunar eclipse (Oct. 28 - 2004)

Conditions: acquired at my observatory in Denmark. Very hazy, end of the eclipse clouded out. Seeing pretty bad (~6 arcsec).

Setup: Borg 100ED F6.4, DF-2 focusser, CFW8 (H-alpha, OIII, H-beta), ST10XE (here's a picture of this setup).

Exposure time: ranged from 0.01 sec (1x1 binning) to 10 sec (2x2 binning) as the eclipse reached totality.

Processing outline (Mira, Photoshop): dark subtracted, flat fielded, levels & curves, mild unsharp mask. The R,G,B channels were assigned as H-alpha,OIII,OIII+H-beta; i.e. I use the fact that OIII is blue-green, not just green. I've used this color assignment scheme earlier with good succes on deep sky objects such as the Helix nebula.

The weather outlook for this event was quite bad; I didn't really expect to see totality. I chose to use narrowband filters instead of the usual broadband RGB filters so that I could image the partially eclipsed moon without saturation. Although it was very hazy I did manage to capture totality before clouds came rolling in. The light levels during totality were quite low, forcing me to use 2x2 binning and 10 sec. exposures. For this part of the event broadband RGB filters would have been much more appropriate.
